Engineering and Physics Provides a Right Answer
Driving to work today I was filled with inspiration due to a radio report of the inspiring moment of the landing of the Curiosity on Mars. The reporter had concentrated on the leader of the rover’s entry, descent and landing engineering team, Adam Steltzner, and the star of the moment. The quote that hit me while I waited at the traffic light was “The thing that engineering and physics gave me was, there’s a right answer.” The guy had said it perfectly. This is what we at COMSOL have been working with for years, and is the whole point of COMSOL Multiphysics.

NASA is a great customer of ours and has used COMSOL in a number of applications. In COMSOL News 2009 we even wrote about the use of COMSOL for modeling the heat transfer of the Mars Rover, for protecting instrumentation.
COMSOL gives users like NASA the flexibility to model anything. This could be as varied as the different components that make up a rover, to the unique conditions of Mars itself. But in all situations, they are defining the underlying engineering and physics principles, and looking for that right answer.
