One of the differences between this year’s COMSOL Conference, and previous years’, is that this year we filmed a lot of it. During the next few weeks we will be publishing some of these videos for those that were there, to enjoy it once again, and for those that weren’t to get a taste of what went on. To kick these all off, I’m proud to present the first keynote video, which takes us to Babel.

Many of the engineers and scientists that we collaborate with have been in the game for years. All of them are great experts in the applications that they want to model, and many of them are also proficient at computer science — it was not unusual that the first model or simulation of their application was a few lines of code they wrote themselves. Moreover, in a number of situations I’ve come across their application has been so specific that they’ve been forced to write code, as none of the commercial simulation packages available at the time have been able to handle the uniqueness of their application. But as commercial software has become more sophisticated and flexible, such as COMSOL Multiphysics’ ability for you to enter your own equations, this need is diminishing. So which is better? Proprietary code or off-the-shelf? And should you migrate your old proprietary code to a commercial package?

While alternative energy is the energy of the future, fossil fuels are the energy of right now. Coal, especially, is still heavily relied on for energy production and is a primary source of electricity generation in many countries including the US and China. In fact, world coal consumption is actually increasing year-to-year. Scientists need to be concentrating on how to make alternative energies more widespread, but they also need to make coal a better, more efficient fuel source. Designing systems to more efficiently use coal is imperative to minimize the effect coal has on the environment. Coal production is stronger than ever, but its negative effects are made weaker every day.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a treatment for chronic back pain that has been around for over 40 years. It involves implanting electrodes that apply electric potentials directly to the spine, interfering with the human pain signaling circuitry. The body attempts to send pain signals to the brain, but the electrodes act as a barrier preventing the signals from reaching the brain. Although an overall successful method for treating back pain, researchers have been improving on the design since the inception of SCS.

Reducing the amount of plastic used in the production of bottled water would both help companies save on packaging costs and be more sustainable. That seems easy enough, until you consider the fact that during storage and transportation, the bottles are stacked on top of one another. With a lot of bottles comes a lot of mechanical load. How can companies reduce the amount of plastic without compromising the structure of the bottles?

It was a pleasure meeting one of COMSOL’s Certified Consultants at the Milan Conference last month. Similarly to a number of consultants, and as evident from their name, BE CAE & Test offers both the ability to simulate processes and designs as well as test them. From the island of Sicily, Giuseppe Petrone and Marco Scionti have been working with COMSOL for almost three years now, and have performed a number of projects for customers based on COMSOL Multiphysics. From what I could see from the great booth at the conference, BE CAE & Test does a lot of simulating.

Last month was Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). In many parts of the world walks were coordinated to fundraise for breast cancer research, and here in the U.S. it also meant NFL football players donned pink gear throughout the month. It was only fitting then, that a poster was presented on the topic at our conference in Boston. The research presented there explores a new method for detecting breast tumors.
