This course is a comprehensive introduction to the Acoustics Module and its usage for the modeling of acoustics and vibration phenomena in the COMSOL Multiphysics environment. You will learn how to use the appropriate interfaces and boundary conditions to model acoustic wave generation, propagation, reflection, transmission, scattering and absorption in different types of media including fluid, solid, porous, piezoelectric devices and pipe systems. Demonstrations include simulations of both fluid and elastic waves with couplings between Pressure Acoustics, Structural Mechanics and Piezoelectricity in addition to the frequency characteristics of an acoustic system. Modal, frequency-response, and transient simulations are covered. This class also covers more advanced topics such as non-destructive testing, aeroacoustics, thermoacoustics and nonlinear acoustics. The add-on modules used in this course are the: Acoustics Module, Structural Mechanics Module, and Pipe Flow Module.

Suggested Background

This course assumes familiarity with the fundamentals of acoustics and vibration. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics participate in a free-of-charge workshop prior to attending this class.


Dr. Sven Friedel
COMSOL Multiphysics GmbH, Zurich

Dr. Sven Friedel is a physicist and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Leipzig (Germany) in geophysics, specializing in electromagnetic inverse problems applied to tomographic imaging. He also taught courses in, among other things, geomagnetics. For his research he focused on the simulation of electrical, fluidic, and thermal processes in volcanoes. After several years working as a postdoctoral researcher in the area of geotechnical engineering at the ETH in Zurich, in 2004 Dr. Friedel established COMSOL AB's branch office in Switzerland.

Dr. Thierry Luthy (Physicist)
COMSOL Multiphysics GmbH, Zurich

Thierry Luthy studied at the University of Neuchâtel in the field of superconducting materials. After his physicist diploma, he worked for some years at the EMPA Dübendorf in various research areas e.g. the nondestructive testing of high-technology ceramics. In 2003, he completed his PhD at the ETH Zürich in the field of composite materials.

Cancellation / return policies

Instructor-led training tuition is fully refundable if we receive written notification (via mail or e-mail) of cancellation on or before 14 business days prior to the class. Cancellations made less than 14 business days prior to class will be charged 25% of the course fee. If you fail to show up to class without written notice, you will be charged the full tuition. You may send a substitute in your place to avoid a fee. If a training course cannot take place as scheduled due to circumstances beyond COMSOL's control, we will issue a full refund for the amount that you have already paid.


The fee for this one day course is CHF 999 / CHF 499 (academic, upon request) + VAT including printed course material, lunch and coffee. If you book several courses at once - discounts may be available upon request.
