Introduction

This is an introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics and the RF Module with a focus on high frequency electromagnetic waves modeling. You will learn how to build models in Microwave Engineering, Antenna Design and Photonics. The course also gives an introduction to multiphysics involving electromagnetic phenomena, e.g. coupling of EM waves to heat or mechanics. It allows current and potential users of COMSOL Multiphysics and the RF Module to quickly get acquainted with its modeling capabilities.

Contents

  • The scope and capabilities of the RF Module
  • The 2D, 2D axisymmetric, and 3D application modes
  • Modeling electromagnetic material properties
  • Boundary conditions, where and how to use them
  • Various ways of modeling radiating boundaries
  • Port and Lumped Port boundary conditions
  • Transition boundary conditions
  • Periodic domains
  • Scattered field formulations
  • Memory requirements for meshing and solving
  • Optimal usage of the solvers for large 3D models
  • Non-linear eigenvalue problems
  • S-parameters and far field post-processing
  • Combined EM and heat transfer modeling

Suggested Background

This course is suitable for anyone interested in using COMSOL Multiphysics for the mathematical modeling of physics phenomena. An advanced undergraduate/beginning graduate level of engineering or science education is assumed. Also assumed are some familiarity with Maxwell’s equations and the fundamentals of electromagnetics. Attendees should have an understanding of the COMSOL GUI, model building methods, and multiphysics finite element methods as taught in the "COMSOL Multiphysics workshops".

Speakers

Dr. Sven Friedel
COMSOL Multiphysics GmbH, Zurich

Dr. Sven Friedel is a physicist and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Leipzig (Germany) in geophysics, specializing in electromagnetic inverse problems applied to tomographic imaging. He also taught courses in, among other things, geomagnetics. For his research he focused on the simulation of electrical, fluidic, and thermal processes in volcanoes. After several years working as a postdoctoral researcher in the area of geotechnical engineering at the ETH in Zurich, in 2004 Dr. Friedel established COMSOL AB's branch office in Switzerland.

Dr. Thierry Luthy
