This paper presents a FEA approach to estimate temperature rise and thermal stress experienced in PZT/Solid structure due to internal heat generation and dynamic excitation. The power dissipative density consumed by structural damping of the mass structure, internal heat generation due to applied voltage and dielectric loss of the PZT material is first determined. The dissipative power is then treated as equivalent thermal dissipation to create a distributed heat source throughout the PZT material and mass structures.

A three dimensional finite element model was developed in COMSOL to predict in dissipated power and temperature distribution on surface of the PZT/solid structures. The first frequency of solid structure was found by Eigenfrequency analysis for the longitudinal vibration. PZT analysis carried out at first longitudinal frequency to estimate the dissipated power. Temperature distribution on surface calculated using the estimated dissipated power in transient condition.
