There is a considerable world-wide interest among lightning protection engineers and designers on the improvement of the standard procedures to assess the location of the most vulnerable places on complex structures to be struck by lightning flashes.

This paper presents the implementation of the Self-consistent Lightning Interception Model in Matlab by using the COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5 programming language. This state-of-the-art physical model simulates the transient lightning attachment process by considering the time-varying electric field around a complex structure, which is here computed in three dimensions with COMSOL Multiphysics. The general details and experiences gained on the implementation of the model to evaluate the interactions of lightning flashes with any practical structure are here presented.
