Introduction to Modeling Optical Waveguides

In this recorded webinar, learn all about modeling optical waveguides using COMSOL Multiphysics® and the Wave Optics Module, an add-on product that expands the features and functionality for modeling optical applications. We begin with a general introduction to the different types of optical waveguides, after which we provide a brief overview of the software. We then introduce the stationary and time-dependent physics interfaces and their governing equations, available through the Wave Optics Module, with a specific focus on using the beam envelopes method for modeling waveguides. From there, we demonstrate building a model of a directional coupler using the Electromagnetic Waves, Beam Envelopes interface. There is also a discussion on the importance of choosing the most suitable wave direction vector settings for your waveguide simulations.

Toward the end of the webinar, we highlight some advanced application examples, including:

Additionally, we showcase the specialized features for simulating out-coupling of waveguides.

This webinar is relevant to recently released versions of COMSOL Multiphysics®, although you may notice small differences between versions. You can learn more about the Wave Optics Module here.
