COMSOL 3.2a Update

If you are using COMSOL 3.2 software products, it is recommended that you upgrade to COMSOL 3.2a. See Installation below for information on how to check your COMSOL software version and how to install the COMSOL 3.2a update.

Release Notes

You find information about new features and updates to the documentation in the COMSOL 3.2a Release Notes.

Installation

Before you begin, make sure that you run COMSOL version 3.2.0.222 or 3.2.0.224. These are the only versions that can be updated with the 3.2a software update. On the Help menu, click "About COMSOL Multiphysics" to check your version.

32-bit PC Installation Instructions

Download the self-extracting executable file c32a_win32.exe. Close all instances of COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB before you begin the installation process. Run the executable and unpack the files to your COMSOL installation directory, for example, C:\COMSOL32. This is the directory where the file licenseinfo.ini and the directories comsol and doc are located.

Note: Applying the update clears the settings in the comsol.opts file in the bin directory of the installation. This means that if you are using COMSOL with MATLAB, you may need to change the path to your MATLAB installation. Edit line 9 in comsol.opts to reflect the directory of your MATLAB installation.

64-bit PC Installation Instructions

Before installing the 64-bit version, make sure your system fulfills the 64-bit system requirements:

The 64-bit version also contains the 32-bit binaries related to the 3.2a upgrade so you do not need to download both the 32- and 64-bit version.

Download the self-extracting executable file c32a_win64.exe. Close all instances of COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB before you begin the installation process. Run the executable and unpack the files to your COMSOL installation directory, for example, C:\COMSOL32. This is the directory where the file licenseinfo.ini and the directories comsol and doc are located.

Right-click the "COMSOL Multiphysics" icon on the Desktop and select "Properties". In "COMSOL Multiphysics 3.2 Properties", on the "Shortcut" page, change "Target:" from C:\COMSOL32\bin\comsol.exe to C:\COMSOL32\bin\comsol64.exe. If you selected another installation directory than C:\COMSOL32, the path to the executable might be different than above. Click OK. Right-click on the newly created shortcut and rename it "COMSOL Multiphysics 3.2a (64-bit)". (The 32-bit version of COMSOL Multiphysics has also been upgraded to version 3.2a, so you could rename its shortcut too to reflect this.)

UNIX and Linux Installation Instructions

You have the option of downloading one of the following files

c32a_glnx86.tar.gz   Linux, gzipped version
c32a_glnxi64.tar.gz   Linux with Itanium 2 support, gzipped version
c32a_glnxa64.tar.gz   Linux with AMD64/EM64T support, gzipped version
c32a_hpux.tar HP-UX, uncompressed version
c32a_hpux.tar.gz HP-UX, gzipped version
c32a_solaris.tar Solaris, uncompressed version
c32a_solaris.tar.gz Solaris, gzipped version

On HP-UX and Solaris, please download the gzipped version if you have the gzip tools available. Uncompress the file by typing, for example,

gunzip c32a_hpux.tar.gz

Unpack the tar archives in the COMSOL installation directory, for example, /usr/local/comsol32 by typing

cd /usr/local/comsol32
tar xf {download directory}/c32a_hpux.tar

on HPUX, and

cd /usr/local/comsol32
tar xf {download directory}/c32a_solaris.tar

on Solaris. On Linux, and if you have the GNU tar command available on HP-UX or Solaris, you can type

cd /usr/local/comsol32
tar xzf {download directory}/c32a_glnx86.tar.gz

Note: Applying the update clears the settings in the comsol file in the bin directory of the installation. This means that if you are using COMSOL with MATLAB, you may need to change the path to your MATLAB installation. Edit line 3 in comsol to reflect the directory of your MATLAB installation.

Mac OS X Installation Instructions

Download the file c32a_macosx.dmg. Mount the downloaded disk image by double-clicking it. Run the AppleScript "COMSOL 3.2a Installer". It will ask you to locate your COMSOL installation folder, for example, "Macintosh HD:Applications:COMSOL32". This is the folder where the file comsol.ini and the folders comsol and doc are located.

Note: Applying the update clears the settings in the comsol file in the bin directory of the installation. This means that if you are using COMSOL with MATLAB, you may need to change the path to your MATLAB installation. Edit line 3 in comsol to reflect the directory of your MATLAB installation.

Check the Installation

Do the following to check that the installation is complete:

  1. Start COMSOL Multiphysics
  2. Click OK in the Model Navigator
  3. On the Help menu, click About COMSOL Multiphysics.
  4. Check that the version number is 3.2.0.300 (If the installation did not finish correctly, the version number is 3.2.0.222 or 3.2.0.224).
