COMSOL 3.3a Update

If you are using COMSOL 3.3 software products, it is recommended that you upgrade to COMSOL 3.3a. See Installation below for information on how to check your COMSOL software version and how to install the COMSOL 3.3a update.

Release Notes

You find information about new features and updates to the documentation in the COMSOL 3.3a Release Notes.

Installation

Before you begin, make sure that you run COMSOL version 3.3.0.405. This is the only version that can be updated with the 3.3a software update. On the Help menu, click "About COMSOL Multiphysics" to check your version.

PC Installation Instructions

There are four different self-extracting executable files available:

c33a_win32.exe 32-bit Windows
c33a_win64.exe 64-bit Windows
c33a_win32_java.exe 32-bit Windows and Java 1.6
c33a_win64_java.exe 64-bit Windows and Java 1.6

We recommend downloading the executables including Java 1.6 if you run the COMSOL software with the Windows Vista operating system. Otherwise, downloading the executables with Java 1.6 is optional.

Download the self-extracting executable file, for example, c33a_win32.exe. Close all instances of COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB before you begin the installation process. Run the executable and unpack the files to your COMSOL installation directory, for example, C:\COMSOL33. This is the directory where the file licenseinfo.ini and the directories java and doc are located.

Note: Applying the update using one of the executables that include Java 1.6 clears the settings in the comsol.opts file in the bin directory of the installation. This means that if you are using COMSOL with MATLAB, you may need to change the path to your MATLAB installation. Edit line 9 in comsol.opts to reflect the directory of your MATLAB installation.

Note: If you are using the CATIA V5 import module, you need to register the module by executing the following command:

C:\COMSOL33\ext\catiav5\lib3dx\intel_a\code\bin\setcatenv.exe -e COMSOL33a -desktop no -a global -p C:\COMSOL33\ext\catiav5\lib3dx

assuming that C:\COMSOL33 is your COMSOL installation path.

UNIX and Linux Installation Instructions

You have the option of downloading one of the following files:

c33a_glnx86.tar.gz Linux, gzipped version
c33a_glnxi64.tar.gz Linux with Itanium 2 support, gzipped version
c33a_glnxa64.tar.gz Linux with AMD64/EM64T support, gzipped version
c33a_solaris.tar.gz Solaris, gzipped version

Uncompress the file by typing, for example,

gunzip c33a_solaris.tar.gz

Unpack the tar archives in the COMSOL installation directory, for example, /usr/local/comsol33 by typing

cd /usr/local/comsol33
tar xf {download directory}/c33a_solaris.tar

on Solaris. On Linux, and if you have the GNU tar command available on Solaris, you can type

cd /usr/local/comsol33 tar xzf {download directory}/c33a_glnx86.tar.gz

Note: Applying the update clears the settings in the comsol file in the bin directory of the installation. This means that if you are using COMSOL with MATLAB, you may need to change the path to your MATLAB installation. Edit line 3 in comsol to reflect the directory of your MATLAB installation.

Mac OS X Installation Instructions

Mount the downloaded disk image by double-clicking it. Run the AppleScript "COMSOL 3.3a Installer". It will ask you to locate your COMSOL installation folder, for example, "Macintosh HD:Applications:COMSOL33". This is the folder where the file licenseinfo.ini and the directories java and doc are located.

Note: Applying the update clears the settings in the comsol file in the bin directory of the installation. This means that if you are using COMSOL with MATLAB, you may need to change the path to your MATLAB installation. Edit line 3 in comsol to reflect the directory of your MATLAB installation.

Note: It is not possible to upgrade to an Intel Mac over the Internet. To use the COMSOL 3.3a software on Intel Macs, please contact your local COMSOL representative to obtain COMSOL 3.3a installation media (DVD or CDs).

Check the Installation

Do the following to check that the installation is complete:

  1. Start COMSOL Multiphysics.
  2. On the Help menu, click About COMSOL Multiphysics.
  3. Check that the version number is 3.3.0.511 (If the installation did not finish correctly, the version number is 3.3.0.405).
