This introductory demonstration will show you the fundamental workflow of the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling environment. We will cover all of the key modeling steps, including geometry creation, setting up physics, meshing, solving, and postprocessing.

Modeling Nuclear Fuel: A Study in Multiphysics

Nuclear fuel experiences a complex environment of elevated temperatures, temperature gradients, mechanical loading, thermal expansion, swelling, densification, radiation, and continuously evolving composition and microstructure. Understanding and predicting the coupled, aggregate behavior is crucial for optimizing the design and operation of the fuel. In this talk, I will present two COMSOL Multiphysics® models developed for modeling the continuum and microstructural aspects of nuclear fuel.

COMSOL Speakers

Bjorn Sjodin
Bjorn Sjodin is the VP of product management at COMSOL. He has been with COMSOL since 1995 and started out as a member of the development team in Stockholm, Sweden. He joined the COMSOL office in Burlington in 2002.
Ellie Kulla
Ellie Kulla is a technical sales engineer who joined COMSOL in 2012. She received her PhD in biomedical engineering from Brown University. Her research focus was on the mathematical modeling of fluid flow in lab-on-a-chip devices.
Daisy Daivasagaya
Daisy Daivasagaya has been a sales engineer at COMSOL since 2013. She received her master's degree in electrical engineering from McGill University. She specialized in semiconductor circuit-level design and microelectronic sensor R&D.
Jinlan Huang
Jinlan Huang is an applications engineer for vibrations and acoustics and instructs acoustics and heat transfer training courses. She received her PhD from Boston University, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, investigating acoustic wave propagation in complex-tissue environments and ultrasound-induced tissue heating and bleeding control. She joined COMSOL in 2011.
Peter Lyu
Peter Lyu is an applications engineer specializing in fluid flow, heat transfer, and optimization. Peter received his MS and PhD degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan. His research focus was on aircraft design and multidisciplinary design optimization.

Invited Speakers

Andrew Prudil
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Andrew Prudil completed his PhD and postdoctorate in nuclear engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada, where he developed models of nuclear fuel behavior. Currently, he works at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in the Fuel & Fuel Channel Safety Branch. He focuses on the development and application of computer models to improve the safety, economics, and sustainability of nuclear energy. Andrew has contributed to commercial, government, and academic R&D projects such as fuel irradiation safety cases. He has also coauthored numerous journal papers, conference papers, and reports. Most recently, he coauthored a textbook on nuclear engineering that is being published later this year.
