Application of FEM and COMSOL® in Electrical Engineering and Power Systems

The speaker will present the benefits of using COMSOL Multiphysics® in electrical engineering. The presentation is heavily based on work done with underground cables but also discusses other elements of power systems. The presented projects used the finite element method (FEM) to calculate electric fields, magnetic fields, heat transfer, and a combination of the above.

Get a brief introduction to the capabilities of the Heat Transfer Module, such as modeling the thermal performance of buildings, evaporative cooling, and radiation. Several example models will also be discussed.

Use of the COMSOL Multiphysics® Software to Minimize Physical Experiments: Determining Performance of Building Enclosures

Canada is moving toward more stringent regulations on buildings to reduce the energy consumption and reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission in order to support the ambitious 2030 target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40 percent by the federal government. Building envelopes are the main components of buildings that can be enhanced to increase the thermal performance of buildings. In this presentation, we will explain how we use COMSOL Multiphysics® in different aspects of our work, including the following:

  • Conducting the thermal analysis on wall assemblies to calculate their thermal performance by using the Heat Transfer Module
  • Performing hygrothermal simulations of wall assemblies to understand the effect of actual and future climate loads
  • Predicting the deterioration risk of wall components by conducting hygrothermal analysis using heat and moisture transfer in building material and mathematical features in COMSOL Multiphysics®

The multiphysics capability of COMSOL Multiphysics® gives us an option to model other physics associated with the wall assemblies and apply more realistic boundary conditions on the wall assembly in comparison to the dedicated tools for wall assemblies. However, computing time and convergence were found to be the two biggest problems when solving hygrothermal problems.


Attend this session to learn about the capabilities of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software in structural mechanics and related areas. Among other things, we will discuss the newly released Composite Materials Module and the material activation/deactivation feature in the Structural Mechanics Module, which can be used to simulate additive manufacturing and similar processes.

Ellie Kulla

Ellie Kulla is a technical sales engineer who joined COMSOL in 2012. She received her PhD in biomedical engineering from Brown University. Her research focus was on the mathematical modeling of fluid flow in lab-on-a-chip devices.

James Christopher

James Christopher has been with COMSOL since 2017 and is currently working as a sales representative for the province of Quebec and academic accounts in Massachusetts.

Jinlan Huang

Jinlan Huang is an applications engineer for vibrations and acoustics and instructs acoustics and heat transfer training courses. She received her PhD from Boston University, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, investigating acoustic wave propagation in complex-tissue environments and ultrasound-induced tissue heating and bleeding control. She joined COMSOL in 2011.

Jaymin Patel

Jaymin Patel is an applications engineer at COMSOL. His focus is on products related to CFD, heat transfer, and chemical engineering. He received his master's degree in chemical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Bjorn Sjodin

Bjorn Sjodin is the VP of product management at COMSOL. He has been with COMSOL since 1995 and started out as a member of the development team in Stockholm, Sweden. He joined the COMSOL office in Burlington in 2002.

Boguslaw Bochenski
Kinectrics Inc.
Boguslaw Bochenski received his master’s degrees in power systems and in computer science in 2002, followed by a PhD in electrical engineering in 2005, all from the Technical University of Lodz, Poland. Between 2005 and 2009, he worked as an assistant professor at the Institute of Electrical Power Engineering at the same university. Since 2009, he has been affiliated with Kinectrics Inc. in Toronto, Canada, initially as an engineer/scientist and currently as the service line leader for high-voltage cable field testing. Boguslaw has broad experience in thermal ratings of various critical power system components, including transformers and cables; electric and magnetic field analysis; application of statistics and probabilistic methods; as well as transient analysis in distribution and transmission grids. This work also includes the development of mathematical formulations and numerical algorithms as well as software development. Beside modeling and programming, He is experienced in the high-voltage testing of power transformers and high-voltage underground cables. Boguslaw is a professional engineer in Ontario, a member of CIGRE, and a senior member of IEEE.
Mehdi Ghobadi
National Research Council Canada
Dr. Mehdi Ghobadi is a research officer in the Construction Research Centre of the National Research Council Canada. Dr. Ghobadi holds graduate-level degrees, including a PhD, in mechanical engineering-thermofluids and also has a master’s degree in business administration (MBA). With more than 12 years’ experience in CFD modeling and testing of thermal and mechanical systems, he has conducted research in various fields related to heat transfer, thermal management, and fluid dynamics.
Travis Moore
National Research Council Canada
Travis Moore is a research council officer at the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada, joining NRC in 2009. He received his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Carleton University, and he specializes in the design of experiments for and simulation of heat and mass transport through building envelopes.
