The effort to manage massive oil import bills while curtailing a growing pollution problem has resulted in the government encouraging electric vehicle adoption. The resulting acceleration in hybrid and electric vehicle development calls for innovation in battery technology and electric motor designs. This session will focus on the role of simulation in the rapid evolution of global mobility to "green" auto technology. The panelists will share their views on designing electric passenger and heavy duty vehicle components, including batteries, motors & transmission, smart electromagnetic suspension systems, and electric all wheel drives (eAWD).

Battery and Fuel Cell Simulations

Get an overview of using the Batteries & Fuel Cells Module within the COMSOL® software environment for modeling batteries and fuel cells. Aspects related to the transport of ions and current, porous electrodes, and electrode reactions relevant to both applications will be covered. We will address the simulation of lithium-ion battery power and capacity using realistic vehicle drive cycles, modeling of thermal effects on both cell and pack levels, safety aspects, and modeling of capacity fade. In addition, you will get an introduction to different types of models, from low cost to high fidelity. We will discuss aspects related to parameters and parameterization for models, including the simulation of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data.

Tech Café: Structural Mechanics

Join COMSOL engineers and your colleagues at this Tech Café to discuss modeling structural mechanics using COMSOL Multiphysics®. You can also ask questions about specific applications involving multiphysics phenomena such as acoustic-structure interactions, fluid-structure interactions, thermal stresses, and more.

Break for Lunch

In this presentation, you will learn about using COMSOL® to model static, transient, and frequency-domain electromagnetic fields that arise around magnets and coils. We will introduce various ways of modeling magnetically permeable materials. We will also show you how different types of electric motors, such as induction motors and permanent magnet motors, can be modeled in COMSOL®. You will see how electromagnetic forces can be coupled with structural mechanics and acoustics to predict noise in electrical components and how cooling requirements can be estimated.

Acoustics Simulation in the Automotive Industry

Simulations are heavily used in many application areas in the automotive industry, ranging from cabin acoustics and muffler design to the vibrational analysis of components in an NVH setting. You will learn how you can use acoustics simulations in these various application areas. The focus will be on multiphysics phenomena like acoustic-structure interaction (ASI) and convected acoustics.

Heat Transfer

Get a brief overview of using the Heat Transfer Module within the COMSOL® software environment. We will discuss conjugate heat transfer with the combination of heat transfer in solids and heat transfer in fluids, including thermal radiation effects. These phenomena could also be coupled with structural mechanics, chemical reactions, and particle tracing.


Learn about the capabilities of the Structural Mechanics Module for analyzing the mechanical behavior of solid structures within the COMSOL® software environment. We will discuss how existing and user-defined geometries, materials, and physics interfaces can be used to answer questions about stress and strain levels, deformation, stiffness, and many more properties. Get an introduction to running various types of analyses, including stationary, eigenfrequency, time-dependent, transient, and linear buckling analyses. We will also discuss the advanced modeling of fatigue, multibody dynamics, and composite materials using the add-on modules.

Pankaj Nerikar
Pankaj Nerikar is a technical sales manager at COMSOL. He received his PhD from the University of Florida, specializing in atomic-scale modeling of nuclear materials. His areas of expertise include nuclear materials, chemical engineering, materials science, and semiconductors.
Ajay Krishnan Muralidharan
Ajay Krishnan Muralidharan is an applications engineer at COMSOL. He received his PhD from the metallurgical engineering and materials science department at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, specializing in corrosion science.
Prajakta Sabnis
Prajakta Sabnis is the general manager, applications at COMSOL's Bangalore office, which she joined in 2010. Prajakta has a master’s degree in microelectronics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, where she worked on the design and fabrication of a polymeric piezoresistive micro-accelerometer, using nonconventional materials.
Vineet Dravid
Vineet Dravid is the director of India operations at COMSOL. He has been working with COMSOL since 2006, first in the Boston office and in the Bangalore office since 2009. He received his PhD in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 2006.
Prashant Srivastava
Prashant Srivastava joined COMSOL in 2012, and currently works as a product developer within the structural mechanics group. He has also contributed to the development of the Multibody Dynamics Module. He received his PhD in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where he investigated the mechanical behavior of polymeric materials using molecular dynamics simulation.
Ajit Bhuddi
Ajit Bhuddi works as an applications engineer at COMSOL. He received his PhD in mechanical engineering from François Rabelais University, where he predicted the vibroacoustic behavior of fluid-filled pipes using the wave finite element method.

Ishant Jain
Raychem Innovation Center

Ishant Jain is a research & development (R&D) professional with more than 10 years of industry exposure and academic research experience. He has proven competence across a gamut of domains, including electrical, mechanical, materials, steel making, and manufacturing. He has expertise across the fields of overhead equipment for railway tractions, HV/LV electrical accessories for power distributions like insulators and connectors, polymers, industrial heating, steel making and casting processes, and transformers. Ishant Jain is currently working as head of the department (program manager) for material and processing CoE at Raychem Innovation Center based in Vadodara. He has completed his BTech (Hons) in mechanical engineering from MIET and MTech in material and metallurgical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He had worked as a senior researcher with TATA steel R&D Jamshedpur. Since 2014, he has been working with Raychem RPG, driving innovation and developing new products for the energy and power sector. Ishant Jain is TRIZ Level 2 certified and a green belt in Six Sigma. He has authored more than 20 technical papers in renowned national and international journals and has filed 25 patents to his credit. He has contributed to FEA analysis, electrothermal heat transfer, multibody dynamics, CFD, nonlinear structural mechanics, and static and dynamic analysis.

Bhupesh Agrawal
John Deere Technology Center

Bhupesh Agrawal manages the vehicle electrification group at John Deere Technology Center in Pune, India. He is responsible for driving the Electrification Portfolio for compact and utility tractors at John Deere and the delivery of electrified system solutions for global electrification projects across Deere. He has 18 years of global and diversified work experience in vehicle development and research and has worked with leading organizations including John Deere, Cummins, and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He has led technology feasibility and business readiness studies for introducing multiple new products to market with a focus on the infusion of electrification technology in off-highway space. His areas of expertise include electric drive system and component simulation, electrified powertrains, electric machines, and advanced battery technology.

Bhupesh holds an MTech in machine design from Institute of Technology, BHU. He also received certification in system design and management in 2014 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston. He has 2 journal publications, multiple conference papers, and 4 patents in his name and has given his perspective on off-highway electrification in multiple national and international conferences.

Aniruddha Khadke
Noumenon Multiphysics

Aniruddha Khadke is the COO of Noumenon Multiphysics. Noumenon solves advanced multiphysics simulation problems for various industries. Aniruddha has an MS in computational mechanics from Ohio State University. He has been working with leading simulation software companies for the past 20 years in various roles.

Pawan Soami

Pawan Soami is the product manager for the Composite Materials Module and Multibody Dynamics Module. He has been working at COMSOL in the Bangalore office since 2010. He received his master's degree in aerospace engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, where he worked on spectral methods for wave propagation in structures.
