Numerical simulation can lead to a better understanding of rolling bearings, journal bearings, and lubricated pads and can accurately predict their performance, such as wear reduction, efficiency improvement, and pollution decrease. Whether it is hydrodynamic, elastohydrodynamic, or boundary lubrication, numerical models are able to provide great insights into contact problems.

Using the case of a lubricated pad, Jean-David Wheeler from SIMTEC (a COMSOL Certified Consultant) will show you how to build an efficient numerical model, how to analyze the results, and how to understand the contacts' behavior. A lubricated pad simulation application will be introduced as well.

Jean-David Wheeler
SIMTEC

Jean-David Wheeler contributed to the development of a multiscale modeling method during his mechanical engineering studies at INSA Lyon. He obtained his PhD by studying thermal and rheological effects in lubricated contacts from a numerical and experimental point of view. Then, he joined SIMTEC. Now, he develops numerical models, mainly in heat transfer and electromagnetism, as well as apps that enable users to quickly get the most out of high-tech numerical models.

Vincent Bruyère
SIMTEC

Vincent Bruyère obtained his doctorate in mechanical engineering from INSA Lyon, where he focused on the modeling of lubricated contacts. After a postdoctorate in laser welding at the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, Vincent began working at SIMTEC as a modeling engineer. He mainly develops numerical models for applications involving fluid and solid mechanics, heat transfer, and electromagnetism.

Chien Liu
COMSOL

Chien Liu is a senior member of the technical team at COMSOL, working with the MEMS and Semiconductor modules. Previously, he worked in R&D at Polaroid and Zink Imaging, where he coinvented the Zero INK technology. Chien has a PhD from Harvard University in applied physics and a postdoctorate from Rowland Institute for Science.
