Platform: Windows Applies to: LiveLink™ for PTC Pro/ENGINEER® Versions: 6.1, 6.0, 5.6, 5.5, 5.4, 5.3a, 5.3, 5.2a, 5.2, 5.1, 5.0, 4.4, 4.3b, 4.3a, 4.3, 4.2a, 4.2, 4.1, 4.0a, 4.0

Problem Description

The COMSOL menu and Parameter Selection are not available in the PTC Pro/ENGINEER (PTC Creo Elements/Pro) user interface, and parameter names are not synchronized to COMSOL.

Solution

For parameter selection to work in PTC Pro/ENGINEER (PTC Creo Elements/Pro) an add-in needs to be loaded by PTC Pro/ENGINEER. If the add-in is loaded and running a COMSOL menu appears in PTC Pro/ENGINEER.

Another way to check if the add-in is running in PTC Pro/ENGINEER is to select Auxiliary Applications from the Tools menu. In the dialog box with the same name, LiveLink for COMSOL should be listed as running. Click the Info button to get more information about the add-in. The paths listed there to the COMSOL installation have to be correct for the add-in to be loaded.

Problems that might result in the add-in not being loaded are that PTC Pro/ENGINEER is installed after the COMSOL installation, PTC Pro/ENGINEER is reinstalled to a different location, or that the COMSOL installation is moved.

PTC Pro/ENGINEER finds this add-in based on the information in a file called protk.dat. The file contains the path to the COMSOL installation (in two locations). The COMSOL installer places this file in a folder relative to the PTC Pro/ENGINEER installation folder, which you have specified during installation of LiveLink for PTC Pro/ENGINEER. This folder is typically:

C:\Program Files\proeWildfire 5.0 (for PTC Pro/ENGINEER)

C:\Program Files\PTC\Creo Elements\Pro5.0 (for PTC Creo Elements/Pro)

From here the installer knows to place the protk.dat file into

C:\Program Files\proeWildfire 5.0\text\protk.dat (for PTC Pro/ENGINEER)

C:\Program Files\PTC\Creo Elements\Pro5.0\text\protk.dat (for PTC Creo Elements/Pro)

Edit the protk.dat file to update the paths to the COMSOL installation.

In case you are missing the protk.dat file, you can download it below. After editing it, place the file in the appropriate folder as outlined above, and rename the file to protk.dat. If you have other add-ins defined in a protk.dat file in the mentioned location, you need to append the information about the add-in to the existing file. This also includes other COMSOL add-ins.

Note that if you use any of the files below on 32-bit Windows you will need to change win64 to win32 where it appears on the row starting with exec_file COMSOL 5.1 is the last version to support 32-bit Windows.

Restart PTC Pro/ENGINEER for the new settings to take effect.
