Modeling Photonic Crystals in COMSOL Multiphysics

Photonic crystals have a wide range of applications in light propagation as optical metamaterials with the ability to guide and filter light. Using them in the design of devices requires an understanding of how their structure interacts with light and optimizing this knowledge for the desired application. Simulation offers a uniquely useful way to achieve this understanding by enabling the modeling of the structures on several scales — from analysis of individual periodic cells (to predict the band structure and identify dispersion relations and band gaps) to modeling the full structure (to understand realistic light propagation).
This webinar will introduce the capabilities available in the Wave Optics Module, an add-on product to COMSOL Multiphysics®, for modeling photonic crystals. In addition, a live demonstration in the software will cover how to perform a band gap calculation for a photonic crystal formed of an array of GaAs pillars.
