Advice for my COMSOL Workstation

Hi all,

At present, I am going to buy a workstation for 3D modeling using Earth Science Module. Due to budget constraint, I can only consider 2 options:
- 4 cores, 48 GB RAM, 64 bits
- 6 cores, 24 GB RAM, 64 bits
Please recommend me the one that you think a better choice?

tough choice. I would get the most cores up front, and add more memory later as your problems get larger after you start your modeling. It is easier to add memory than to add more cores. Will your workstation have room to expand to add additional cores/memory ?

Thanks much for your suggestion. I dont' think there are more spaces for us to put in more cores/memory in the future,

In that case, I would recommend getting the workstation with the most memory. You will have to wait longer for your solution with 4 cores instead of 6 cores, but you can solve bigger problems with more memory.

As you get experience with large 3D modeling, you may want to consider getting a cluster and use this first machine as your client. Regardless, be sure to get a good 3D graphics card for this machine now since you will be using it for both client/cluster. You could also make this machine your server, and get another smaller machine for your client.
