Structural, morphological and ground deformation studies suggest that the eastern flank of Mt. Etna (eastern Sicily) is spreading seaward. Three contrasting models have been proposed: deep-seated spreading, shallow sliding and tectonic block movements. In order to better understand the kinematics of instability processes on eastern flank of Mt. Etna, a numerical simulation has been applied to a specific case history. In fact, through numerical models we are able to explain how the various tectonic structures interact each other and we can get information about the response of the various layers to magmatic intrusions or gravity related processes. In this work we carried out a 3D finite element simulation using the COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5a software.
