Keynote: Designing a Fusion Reactor Using COMSOL Multiphysics®

The world’s strongest high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet was designed and successfully tested by scientists at Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC). In this archived keynote talk from COMSOL Day: Nuclear Fusion, Dan Brunner discusses the importance of this discovery for fusion technology as well as CFS's four-part project roadmap for developing a tokamak fusion reactor that has the potential to make fusion energy a commercial power source. Brunner also shares how multiphysics simulations are critical to achieving a robust design and how they aid in the analysis of superconducting magnets, vacuum vessels, and RF heating systems in tokamaks.

Dan Brunner is the cofounder and chief technology officer of CFS, where he manages the company's technology portfolio. CFS is a fusion energy startup based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is a spin-off of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
