Terahertz (THz) is the latest popular topic of exploration in the electromagnetics spectrum. The challenges in this field are to design high-power THz sources and optical components with sensitive detectors. Join us for this webinar to see how COMSOL Multiphysics® can be used to design and optimize THz sources and detectors, as well as metamaterial-based THz optical components.

During this session, we will show you how to design a novel photoconductive antenna (PCA) capable of emitting terahertz radiation with high average power. A photonic crystal, like a plasmonic nanostructure array, is embedded in the substrate between the two electrodes. This array shows plasmonic enhancement of the 800 nm IR light near the nanostructures enhancing the THz radiation emission. Multiphysics simulation shows that the nanostructures act as defect sites, which in turn enable fast carrier capture, enhancing THz bandwidths. The field enhancement can be seen in the COMSOL® simulations, clearly validating the experimental observations. Several metamaterials in the THz frequency regime, which can display novel properties, have also been designed. For example, different metamaterial transmissions through Dolmen-like structures have been studied, demonstrating the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect. Some very sensitive types of sensors have also been developed using metamaterial designs for detecting certain proteins.

Dr. S. S. Prabhu is currently a professor of physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), where he also received his PhD in physics. He has published more than 70 papers in international journals, presented more than 80 papers at conferences, and authored several articles in popular and technical magazines. Dr. Prabhu's research interests include ultrafast time-resolved phenomena in materials, terahertz spectroscopy of materials, metamaterials, and high-field terahertz and near-field terahertz microscopy.
