Submarine Cable Analyzer
Application ID: 97291
This application demonstrates how the Application Builder in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software can be used to make advanced cable modeling available to a general audience. At its core is a multiphysics model based on the technology introduced in the Cable Tutorial Series.
The app supports three-phase cables with a solid screen and a stranded, twisted armor. The armor may be magnetic. It accepts input from the user, such as the cross-sectional dimensions, lay lengths of the phases and the armor, bonding type, frequency, voltage, current, and material properties. The output includes capacitance, charging currents, dielectric loss, DC resistance, AC resistance, inductance, magnetic (hysteresis) loss, resistive loss, and temperature. The cable's properties can be exported in Microsoft® Excel® format. Using the Application Builder, the app can be modified to support a double armor, or stranded screens.
More on the Application Builder
The Application Builder in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software enables engineers to create easy-to-use applications based on their simulations. The engineer creating the app customizes the interface and controls the inputs and outputs that the user of the app will be allowed to manipulate. The apps then make the simulation engineer's expertise available to everyone involved in the design and manufacturing processes across all engineering disciplines in your organization. By enabling more people to access simulation, product designs and processes can be improved efficiently and effectively.
More on the Cable Tutorial Series
While this app showcases the advantages of using the Application Builder, the Cable Tutorial Series shows how to use the COMSOL Multiphysics® software to build the numerical models that it runs on. The series includes 2D, 2D axi, 2.5D, and full 3D analyses, and is on par with the latest numerical research when considering both performance and level of detail. Validation is included: The results are analyzed within the context of the IEC 60287 standard, several recent papers, and analytical models.
