By changing our perspective, we can learn a lot about the nature of acoustics. One way to observe acoustics phenomena is by studying standing waves in a solid medium known as a Chladni plate. A special technique creates patterns on the plate that reveal sound’s physical nature.

The greenhouse effect has made it necessary for scientists to develop combustion processes that minimize the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Possible fuels in these processes include biomass and other biofuels, which recycle carbon within a short timescale. But there’s a downside: Combustion of these materials produces carbon and ash particles that must be removed from the exhaust. To improve particle filtration, researchers studied electrostatic filter designs using models that were validated by comparing them to experimental data.

But with genetic algorithms, we can use the basic principles of natural selection to solve antenna optimization problems. For example, genetic algorithms enabled one research group to optimize the geometry of an optical antenna. They implemented their study by using LiveLink™ for MATLAB®, an add-on product to the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.

Human-powered vehicles like tricycles can provide a sustainable alternative to passenger vehicles and help riders avoid traffic in populated areas. Before a tricycle design is ready to roll, it needs to be optimized to meet safety requirements, which can prove difficult due to the complex structure of the tricycle. To efficiently pinpoint weak areas in a tricycle frame design, a research team used the Structural Mechanics Module with the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.

Measuring acceleration is important in high-speed dynamics, as velocity, force, and pressure are derived from it. Sensing elements inside accelerometers make it possible to obtain such measurements. As technology advances, these sensor packages must be optimized to handle higher vibrational frequency bandwidths. To accomplish this, researchers tested their novel piezoresistive sensor chip as part of a package design. Their simulation results, which agree well with experimental data, pave the way for optimizing sensor packages to achieve higher bandwidths.
