This CFD Modeling course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the CFD Module, an add-on to COMSOL Multiphysics® that provides capabilities for modeling a wide range of fluid flow phenomena. During the 4-day online course, we will introduce you to all of the physics interfaces and general functionality provided by this module. By the end of the course, you will have been exposed to the modeling of single-phase laminar flow, turbulent flow, compressible flow, conjugate heat transfer, reacting flow, fluid–structure interaction (FSI), multiphase flow, and porous media flow. In addition, we will discuss best practices and useful convergence techniques depending on the specific type of problem at hand.

Schedule

Day 1

11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT

This day will begin with an exercise in which we will put together a simple single-phase flow model in order to familiarize ourselves with the COMSOL® software's user interface (UI) and workflow. We will provide a brief theoretical overview of the underlying single-phase flow and discuss a few important nondimensional numbers that help us determine the flow regime. Next, each of the dedicated features and boundary conditions in the single-phase flow interfaces will be discussed.

The following topics will be covered:

  • The COMSOL® UI and workflow for setting up laminar flow models
  • A simple theoretical overview of governing equations
  • Flow regimes
  • Boundary conditions

2–5 p.m. EDT

The afternoon session will be dedicated to the turbulent flow modeling capabilities in COMSOL®.

Day 2

The second day will build on the training from the first day. We will first look at modeling compressible flows, where the density is a function of temperature and pressure. This naturally extends to conjugate heat transfer modeling and high-Mach-number flow modeling. Finally, we will consider reacting flow as well as fluid–structure interaction.

Day 3:

The third day will focus on the methods available in COMSOL® to model multiphase flows. The two distinct classes of multiphase flow models are separated and dispersed. In a separated multiphase flow, the interface between two immiscible fluids is explicitly tracked. In large-scale problems, tracking the interface movement, for example, of thousands of bubbles, becomes impractical. In these cases, a dispersed multiphase flow model can be used which tracks the volume fraction of the dispersed phase.

Day 4:

The last day will focus on additional specific kinds of flows. In particular, we will first spend some time on modeling non-Newtonian flows and viscoelastic flows.

In the afternoon session, we will discuss the porous media flow interfaces:

  • Single-Phase Flow in Porous Media
  • Multiphase Flow in Porous Media

The depth of coverage of some or all of the abovementioned topics may vary according to the time available and the interests of the participants.
