Heat Transfer Modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics®
Intensive introduction to thermal modeling and analysis using COMSOL Multiphysics®
This training course covers the capabilities of the Heat Transfer Module, an add-on to the COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation platform for thermal modeling and analysis. During the 4-day online course, you will learn to model various modes of heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation) using predefined heat transfer interfaces. You will also learn how the Heat Transfer Module can be used for modeling electronic cooling, bioheating, thermal stresses, electromagnetic heating, phase change materials, and various other thermal applications.
The course will also provide an overview of several important features in the Heat Transfer Module such as thin layers, thermal contact, and user-defined heat sources for efficient thermal analysis. You will learn to study the influence various design parameters — such as the choice of materials, geometric dimensions, and operating conditions — have on the temperature distribution.
Training Course Objective
We will use a combination of instructive and self-guided hands-on training together with theoretical and practical lectures. The goal is to immerse you in the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling workflow and help you feel comfortable working with the Heat Transfer Module. By the end of the training course, you will know how to efficiently model heat transfer with the COMSOL® software.
Schedule
Day 1
11 a.m.–5 p.m. EST
The first day will begin with an exercise of putting together a conductive heat transfer model to familiarize ourselves with the COMSOL Multiphysics® user interface (UI) and modeling workflow. We will provide a brief theoretical overview of the underlying conductive heat transfer. Finally, we will discuss multiphysics options for models with conduction like Joule heating and bioheat transfer.
- Overview of heat transfer interfaces
- Conduction
- Heat sources
- Bioheat transfer and other classical multiphysics couplings
Day 2
11 a.m.–5 p.m. EST
The second day will cover how to add convection as an additional mode of heat transfer in COMSOL Multiphysics®. We will introduce the many ways of accounting for convection in a heat transfer model, ranging from simple analytic approximations to fully coupling with the fluid flow interface in the COMSOL® software. We will reintroduce the theoretical background to motivate the nondimensional numbers that can be used to characterize a heat transfer system. Finally, we will close out the day with some advanced extensions on heat transfer as well as best practices for solving heat transfer models.
- Nonisothermal flow
- Flow compressibility
- Forced convection, gravity, and natural convection
- Laminar and turbulent flow regimes
- Energy balance
- Heat transfer in porous media
- Heat transfer in shells
- Heat transfer with phase change
- Discretization, mesh, and solvers
Day 3
Work on exercises (no class)
Day 4
11 a.m.–5 p.m. EST
The final day will cover the third mode of heat transfer: radiation. For opaque domains emitting and absorbing radiation, a surface-to-surface model is appropriate and we will discuss how to set up such a calculation. Conversely, the COMSOL® software includes a number of methods to model a medium that internally radiates. We will compare these methods and discuss when each one is appropriate to use and their respective advantages.
- Surface-to-surface radiation
- Wavelength dependency of material properties
- Radiation in participating media (DOM, P1, Rosseland, and Beer–Lambert)
- Connecting ambient data to your model
